Gabriel Yared to Avi Nesher, July 20th, 4:04pm, re: scoring Nesher's Le Secrets:

My dear Avi,

In order to continue our dialogue, I need to open up to you and confess what I am feeling and going through at the moment, as it is having a huge impact on me, preventing me from working until now .

Because I regard you as an artist and friend, for whom I have great respect and admiration, it is of utmost importance to me that I share my dilemmas with you and I hope that you will not mind or feel offended in any way, as this is far from being my intention. I just want to be honest and sincere with you.

I am not and have never been politically active in my life, and politics have never infringed upon my work. For me to compose music is an act of love, coming from the heart and soul, and at present my heart and my spirit are completely devastated by what the Israeli army is doing to Lebanon, the country where I was born and where my family lives. Everyday I see death, destruction, horror, bombs and blockades. My mother, my sisters and their families live in Beirut, and all those people who are so close to me no longer live or sleep, they are terrorised by this war. My heart cannot help but to feel for them and my conscience is very troubled. How could I collaborate on an Israeli film, giving it all the essence of my music and my heart whilst my family and friends are besieged under the Israeli bombs and attacks? I cannot find peace within me, and I wanted to express to you these doubts that are tearing me more and more apart. I know very well that Hezbollah is responsible for this outbreak and I condemn their acts as does the majority of the Lebanese people but this country where I was born and grew up, has already endured a civil war that lasted 15 years, to which I lost my brother, members of my family, and many friends and then this country gently came round, rebuilt itself, finding a certain balance and normality, it finally got rid of the Syrians and life begun again full of hope. I was there not too long ago to see my mother who was ill, and I was happy to see that things had evolved, that we were going forward. Now because of this stupid war and all the destruction of the country’s infrastructure, Lebanon has gone backwards to what it was 50 years ago and every day there are more and more deaths… What I am feeling deep down in myself is preventing me from composing music and is putting me in a very embarassing situation and creating a real dilemma for my conscience. I wanted to express myself to you honestly and sincerely because I respect your work and you as an individual and made you a promise and now I feel caught between my word and my conscience. You must know that music comes from the heart and that for the moment the Angels of Light are quiet ,silent, and I do not hear them.

Avi Nesher replies To Gabriel Yared, July 21st 2006:

Dear Gabriel,

Writers rarely find themselves without words, but your beautiful and very sad letter has moved me to a point where I was broken hearted and seeking the right way to respond.

Now, a day later, I am trying to collect my thoughts and be honest and precise about my feelings.

First of all, from the first day of this war, I have been worried about your mother, and about your inability to see her, this must make you feel so helpless, and so anguished – I know I would feel unbearably exasperated if I were in your place. Anguish is unfortunately well spread and very common in these regions – both in Beirut and in Haifa – but in the two days we spent in Paris, as our collaboration and friendship developed, I have come to feel as though I know your mother. Therefore, to some degree, in a way of emotional and artistic osmosis, I share your anguish and your pain, and not a day goes by without a prayer for your mothers health ( I would really appreciate if you could let me know how is she doing).

Secondly, I have the greatest respect for you as an artist and great affection for you as a friend. There is nothing I crave more then for you to leave your musical imprint on "The secrets" – I have no a doubt you would have written a great and unique score – but I have absolute respect for any decision you will make. There is a voice inside of me that whispers that in such a time of horror art must triumph over history and wouldn't-it-be-wonderful if and Israeli-born director and a Lebanese-born composer could take a stand against history, and against the heartless stupidity and blindness of leaders on both sides by collaborating on a work of art that people of all faiths can respond to. In a way, this is the only way people like us can make a difference.

Yet, I realize that even if your mind accepted my notion of rebellion against history, your heart would find it difficult to join in. If I were in your place, my heart would find it as difficult, if not down right impossible, as your heart.

To be perfectly clear: my friendship and my respect are yours even if you decide that it is simply impossible for you to write this score, I will respect your decision, I will embrace you, and I will keep preying for your mother, and I will make it my mission to work with you, in the future, on another movie (perhaps "MonteDeDio").

I hope my words express the depth of my feelings. You are a great composer and a good man – and whatever happens I am set on making this sad chapter in both our lives something that strengthens our friendship and desire for artistic collaboration.

To quote Pete Seeger: we shall overcome.

Your friend, Avi
